Blog RBD Block Challenge 2025 - Week 2: Around the Corner

Welcome to Week 2 of the Riley Blake Designs Block Challenge! This week’s block, Around the Corner, was designed by the talented Beverly McCullough (@flamingotoes). Its clean lines and bold design make it such a joy to create, and it’s a wonderful addition to our quilts!

Personal Insights: Building Momentum with Around the Corner

As I worked on Around the Corner, I couldn’t help but reflect on how this design feels like a new beginning in every corner—moving outward with purpose and creativity. The crisp geometry encourages a play with colors, and I had so much fun experimenting with my fabric choices.

For this block, I leaned into the theme of growth and connection using prints from my It Takes a Village collection. Pairing bold and subtle tones helped frame the vibrant coral center, giving the block a balanced yet striking appearance.

This Week’s Block: Around the Corner

Around the Corner is a beautifully structured 10” x 10” finished block that combines symmetry and movement. Beverly’s design offers endless opportunities to play with fabric choices while keeping the piecing approachable for all skill levels.

My Take on the Block

Here’s how I brought my version of Around the Corner to life:

  •   Fabric Choices: I used prints from It Takes a Village for the framing layers, with Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cottons in coral for the striking center.
  •   Color Contrast: The coral pops against the muted, textural tones in the framing, creating depth and visual interest.
  •   Tips for Precision:
-When using the Stitch-and-Flip (SNF) method, mark your diagonal lines clearly and press seams carefully for a clean finish.
-Align your corners thoughtfully—small adjustments make a big difference in the overall look.
A rotating cutting mat is great for trimming small pieces!

Fabrics I Used

Progress So Far

Here’s how my quilt is shaping up:

  •   Block 1: Bloom & Grow
  •   A cheerful block that set the tone with its dynamic symmetry.
  •   Block 2: Around the Corner
  •   A bold design that symbolizes growth and new directions.

Each week, our quilts are growing into something truly special!
