Week 7 Blog Post: Embellish Your Blocks

We’ve made it to Week 7 of the Save the Day Quilt-Along, and it’s time to get creative! This week is all about embellishing your blocks—an optional step that lets you add those personal touches to make your quilt truly one-of-a-kind.

Whether you want to add embroidery, applique, or fabric paint, there’s no limit to what you can do. This is your chance to let your creativity shine and tell a story that’s as unique as the heroes featured in your quilt.

What You’ll Need

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  •   Embroidery Floss: Add stitched details like headlights, windows, or road markings.
  •   Applique Shapes: Layer on fabric elements like stars, badges, or flames for extra dimension.
  •   Fabric Markers or Paint: Personalize blocks with text, outlines, or fun doodles.
  •   Buttons, Sequins, or Patches: Add texture and sparkle to make your blocks stand out.

Tips for Embellishing

  1.   Start Small: Choose one or two blocks to embellish if you’re unsure where to begin.
  2.   Match Your Theme: Think about what fits the story of your quilt. Are you highlighting everyday heroes? Add their names or symbols!
  3.   Keep It Functional: If your quilt is meant for cuddling, make sure embellishments are soft and secure.

Ideas to Inspire You

Not sure where to start? Here are a few embellishment ideas:

  •   Police Car Block: Add embroidered lights or a badge emblem.
  •   Firetruck Block: Stitch flames or ladder details with contrasting thread.
  •   Ambulance Block: Personalize with a stitched red cross or hospital name.
  •   Street Blocks: Draw or applique road signs, arrows, or dashed lines.

You don’t have to embellish every block—sometimes, a little detail goes a long way!

Celebrate Your Creativity

This week is about taking a moment to enjoy the creative process. Embellishing isn’t required, but it’s such a fun way to make your quilt feel personal. Whatever you create, know that it’s adding something extra special to your project.
