RBD Block Challenge 2025 - Week 10: Cat in the Corner

There’s something so intriguing about a block like Cat in the Corner—it invites you to play with placement and find new possibilities in familiar shapes. Designed by Janet Wecker Frisch of Great Joy Studio, this week’s block is a geometric delight that sparks both curiosity and creativity.

A Playful Perspective

When I started working on Cat in the Corner, I imagined the triangles as playful cats darting into view, adding movement and energy to the design. The bold contrast between Flying Geese units and the central square gave the block a sense of balance and symmetry, while the outer corners felt like stepping stones drawing the eye inward.

For my version, I turned to my It Takes a Village collection, letting teals and soft neutrals take the stage. The colors reminded me of a peaceful morning—quiet yet full of potential.

Behind the Design

Cat in the Corner is a 10" x 10" finished block that combines Flying Geese, Stitch-and-Flip (SNF) techniques, and corner triangles. The interplay of sharp angles and open spaces makes it a versatile design for experimenting with color and contrast.

My Creative Approach

Here’s how I brought my Cat in the Corner block to life:

  • Fabric Choices: I selected prints from It Takes a Village , pairing calm teals with soft creams to create a tranquil, inviting palette.
  • Focus on Movement: By highlighting contrast in the Flying Geese units, I emphasized the dynamic flow of the design.
  • Tips for Success:
    1. Trim your Flying Geese carefully to maintain sharp, clean points.
    2. Lay out the entire block before sewing to ensure the directional triangles align perfectly.
    3. Press seams consistently to reduce bulk in the layered corners.
