All Aboard the Railway

"Life is like a train ride...

... some people will sit next to you. Some people will just stand around, oblivious of your existence. Some will have to leave the train while you are having a great conversation and who knows when you will see them again. But if you are lucky, there might be those who will sit with you through your whole journey." - unknown

This month's MINI quilt pattern is extra special to me. My husband manages a shortline railway in our community, so when I saw that Riley Blake Designs was releasing a train inspired fabric line called "All Aboard with Thomas and Friends" - I jumped at the chance to create with these fabrics! The color palette in this fabric line is traditional yet sophisticated. There are

so many great train details in each of these fabrics! I also used some RBD Confetti Cottons for the train tracks and traditionally pieced X's that represent the crossings. This fabric is wonderful for children but doesn't have to be limited to only juvenile projects!

This brand new Mini-Quilt-of-the-Month pattern has so many possibilities! It is called Railway Crossing Mini Quilt Pattern. I used the Sodar print in the four - 6 1/2" squares for a beautiful and quick way to showcase the fabric. However, you can be as creative as you like - if you want to fill those four squares with pieced 6 1/2" blocks,,. or maybe houses, towns, fields etc that the train might even pass by... One of my pattern testers has even made the train tracks into a white picket fence and fields of flowers!!! So much fun!!!

Now, back to trains.... every train need a good conductor! I wanted to design a Modern Rag Doll pattern that was fun and reminiscent of days gone by and old time train conductors! I love his mustache detail and embroidered overalls and pocket! He even has sewn in pant legs! They are easy to do - trust me - I will show you how in the fully illustrated step by step embroidery machine pattern!

This set of patterns together with this fabric line is so much fun and I love that they can be used both as a toy or as decor!!! So All Aboard the Train to a beautiful place of kindness, love and of course - sewing!!! See you there!
